Chapter 18: Day Six
By the sixth day, Preston Whitcombe had lost eleven pounds and the hospital lawn had a gift shop.
A man with a cart sold bottled water, a woman in scrubs sold cupcakes.
A local radio station had parked a van beside the flagpole.
I walked across the grass at noon with a paper bag in one hand and Lachlan beside me.
There were two hundred people, and half of them held phones.
Preston sat cross-legged under a maple tree in the same navy suit, now grey with dirt.
His hair was greasy, his cheeks had hollowed.
The cardboard sign across his knees had been repainted so many times it looked like a ransom note.
I'M STARVING FOR MINA. DAY SIX.
He saw me and his eyes filled.
"Mina," he said. "Oh, thank God. I knew you'd come."
"I didn't come for you."
"I've been here for you. For nothing but you. I haven't eaten since Tuesday." His voice shook with satisfaction. "I was wrong. I was a coward. I'll say it on camera, I'll say it to anyone. Cordelia was a mistake, she's nothing, she's a child. I only ever wanted you."
