Chapter 16: The Board
The boardroom on the fourth floor had a table for twenty and a view of the loading dock.
On Monday at nine it held twenty-two people and one lawyer.
Roderick sat at the far end with a leather portfolio and a fresh white shirt.
He looked rested, which made me want to throw something.
"I'll remind everyone," his lawyer said, "that Mr. Blomqvist holds eleven proxies, voted by their owners in advance."
"Hold them up, then," said the board chair.
She sat at the head of the table with her pearls and a yellow legal pad.
Roderick's lawyer opened a folder and laid out eleven slips of paper in a fan.
The board chair took her glasses from her nose.
"Sir in the grey vest," she said, "your proxy is on the table. Are you also in the room?"
A man at the middle of the table raised two fingers.
"Present, and I rescind it."
"Madam in the green jacket?"
"Present. Rescinded."
"Gentleman by the window. The two ladies by the door."
One by one, five people answered with their hands up.
