Chapter 14: The Third Saturday

Carrie's POV

I let three weeks pass before I picked a day.

I texted him on a Wednesday: Saturday, two o'clock, Washington Park, the bench by the lake. I'll be there an hour.

He wrote back in under a minute: I'll be there.

Faye drove me and parked by the playground, forty yards away, and pretended to read a magazine.

I had traded my crutches for a cane that week, and I made the walk to the bench alone.

Dean was already there.

He stood up when he saw me, and then he did not seem to know what to do with his hands.

He had no basket and no coffee. He did not have his phone in his hand.

"Sit," I said. "Please."

He sat at the far end of the bench.

I noticed that he left a whole cushion between us, and I noticed that he had done it without being told.

"How's the knee?" he said.

"Better. The therapist says I can start the stationary bike on Monday."

"That's great."

"It's fine."

A man jogged past us with a stroller. Two ducks argued at the water's edge.

"I want to say one thing first," I said. "I'm not here to forgive you. I'm here because I wanted to see you without anyone watching."

"Okay."

"Brynn's gone from your phone?"

"I blocked her the morning after the party. She emails me from three addresses. I haven't answered any of them."

"And the review?"

"Her hearing is Thursday. I gave my statement in writing." He rubbed his thumb along his jaw. "The bonus is forfeited. They offered to let me keep it if I came back Monday, and I said no."

I looked at the lake.
