Chapter 21: What Tommy Owed
Tommy's POV
She tied my wrists to her bed with the belt of her robe, and I let her.
I lay on my back on the new sheets with my arms stretched over my head and the knots snug against the oak.
I have sat with my back to a wall for three years.
I had never once lain down where I could not see the door.
"Is that all right?" Celie asked, kneeling over me in the lamplight.
"Yes," I said.
"Tell me if it isn't," she said.
"It's more than all right."
She laughed softly, and the sound went straight through me.
The skillet was empty downstairs, and Vince had played his horn on her porch for the whole street.
She had listened with her bare feet on the railing.
When it was dark she had stood up, taken my hand, and said, "Upstairs. Both of you."
Vince lay on his side beside me now, naked and quiet, one hand on my chest.
He was not talking.
I knew what that cost him.
"You've been the one holding things up since I met you," Celie said to me. "Tonight you hold still."
"I can do that."
"I know you can."
She bent and kissed me.
She took her time with it, her mouth soft and slow against mine, her hair falling around both our faces.
I pulled against the belt and could not move, and the knowledge of it ran hot through my whole body.
"Good," Celie whispered. "Good, Tommy. Stay there."
No one had said that to me since I was a boy.
I shut my eyes.
She kissed down my throat, over my chest, along the ridges of the ribs they had broken.
She laid her mouth on each one and stayed.
"These are mine now," she said against my skin.
"They're yours," I said.
"Say it again," she said.
"They are yours. Everything is."
She went down my stomach with her mouth, and I felt her hair brush my thighs.
