Chapter 11: The Healer Speaks
The silver wolf got up off his belly.
He came to me and pressed his head against my hip, once, hard.
Then he turned and walked down the terrace toward the healer's wheelchair.
The old woman shrank back into her shawls.
The wolf stopped in front of her, and shifted.
Evander knelt naked on the cold stone with the lantern light on his back, breathing hard. Oona swore and threw her riding coat over him.
He stood up in it.
"Say that again," he said to the healer.
She shook her head.
"Say it again. You said it knows her voice. Why would it know her voice?"
"Majesty, I'm old. I talk nonsense."
"Then come and talk nonsense in front of the Council." His voice carried down to the lawn. "Everyone. The great hall. Now."
They came in robes and blankets, barefoot, hair full of leaves, the smell of the forest still on them.
Two hundred wolves packed the great hall to the walls.
The Council took their step in whatever they'd grabbed off the lawn. The North wore a bath towel and dared anyone to mention it.
Lyla sat on the Council step beside my father, a bandage around her neck, her face swollen.
My father had his arm around her shoulders.
He looked at the healer, wheeled into the middle of the floor, and his hand tightened on Lyla's arm until she flinched.
Evander stood in front of the throne in his sister's coat.
He didn't sit.
"You sewed me up after the graduation run," he said to the old woman. "You told me I lived because you were the best healer on the continent."
"I am the best healer on the continent."
"Is that why I lived?"
She looked at her hands.
"Majesty," my father said, standing. "This is cruel. She's eighty years old. She served your father for fifty of them. Don't make her a show for the Court because my daughter had one bad night."
"Sit down, Councilman."
