Chapter 20: Wolfless King
The healer came to the tower at two in the morning, in her nightgown and every shawl she owned.
She put her old hand flat on Evander's bare chest, over the little cut she'd made, and closed her eyes for a long time.
"Well?" I said.
"He's there." She opened her eyes. "Deep down. Breathing."
Evander's shoulders dropped with immense relief.
"Then why can't I reach him?"
"Because for eight years hers stood him up." She patted his chest. "Now he has to stand on his own legs. Some do it in a night. Some take a month."
"And some?" I said.
She looked at me and didn't answer.
The whole Court knew by breakfast.
You can't hide a thing like that from a thousand noses. For eight years the King had smelled like me.
He smelled like nothing now.
I found him at six in the morning in his sitting room, fully dressed, staring at a plate of eggs.
"I can't smell them," he said.
"They're eggs."
"I know they're eggs. I can see they're eggs." He pushed the plate away. "I've never eaten anything I couldn't smell."
