Chapter 25: The Ring
Prim set the lantern down on the kitchen table.
"Six men," she said. "Boots, not paws. They dragged him up the steps by the arms, because his heels cut two lines in the flour." She pointed. "Then down the goat path. Fast."
"Toward Blackmere."
"Toward wherever Lucian told them." She pulled her bow off her back and checked the string. "I'll find him."
"The Court sits at moonrise tomorrow."
"Then I'll be late." She looked at Linden. "You stand up there and talk, Linden. Talk as long as it takes. I'll bring him."
She took two trackers and went out into the dark.
Linden set the stableman's scalp with a needle and thread at the kitchen table while the man swore at him.
The cook had a lump on her head the size of an egg.
"They came in the gate like they owned it," she said. "Smelling like a lady's dresser."
"Rose oil," Ivor said.
He was sitting on the floor with five kits asleep on him.
"They hit an old woman," he said quietly, to nobody. "In my kitchen."
