Chapter 24: Standoff
Ten riders kicked their horses at the line.
They never reached it.
Ivor stepped over Linden.
One moment Linden was standing alone in the snow, and the next there was a silver wall on either side of him and a roof of wing over his head.
The dragon's forefeet came down in the snow to Linden's left and his right.
Linden could hear Ivor's heart through the scales, slow and enormous.
The horses reared and wheeled away.
Ivor lowered his head until his jaw rested on the snow in front of Linden, between him and Osric.
"Under the Hoard Law," Ivor said, and the words came up through the ground into Linden's feet. "This one's mine. He walked onto my gold and I took him. Come and get him."
Behind Linden he heard bowstrings.
Prim, on the miller's broken wall, an arrow on the string.
The trackers in a line beside her, in fox shape, ears flat.
The old elder in front of all of them with her stick planted in the snow.
Thirty foxes, standing in their own square.
Nobody ran.
"You'll burn sixty wolves," Osric said, "the night before the Court?"
