Chapter 23: The Burning Square
"Down," Linden shouted. "Ivor, the garden!"
Ivor folded his wings and dropped.
The square came up at them so fast Linden shut his eyes.
The dragon hit the snow with all four feet, and the whole valley shook.
Every torch in the square blew out at once.
Linden slid down Ivor's shoulder and landed running.
The cottage gate was hanging off one hinge.
The wolf with the axe was standing in Linden's mother's garden, in front of her apple tree.
She had planted it the year Linden was born.
The wolf had the axe up over his shoulder.
"Put it down," Linden said.
The wolf turned.
"Fox," he said, and grinned. "It's Blackmere's tree tomorrow. I'm just early."
Then a shadow came over the cottage roof.
Ivor's head slid down over the eaves, slow, until one gold eye hung a foot above the wolf's hair.
Smoke ran out of the dragon's nostrils and down over the wolf.
The axe fell in the snow.
"Go," Ivor rumbled. "Walk. Don't run. I like chasing things that run."
The wolf walked, very carefully, and then he ran anyway.
Ivor lifted his head and looked at the square.
