Chapter 15: The Hostage

Nora's POV

Ronan wanted me locked in the den until the Challenge, with six wolves outside the door.

I told him I would go to the widows' cabins instead.

"The widows' cabins are on the south line," he said.

"They have a back cellar with a bolt on it, and they asked for me yesterday. They'll shoot anyone who comes through the door."

"They'll shoot the first wolf who sneezes," Tilly said from the table, with her mouth full of toast.

Ronan looked at the ring on my hand, and then at the two sentries he'd chosen, and he gave in.

"Two sentries and Tilly," he said. "You stay in sight of one of them."

He kissed me in front of all three, with his hand wrapped around the back of my neck.

I walked out of the pack house feeling that I could do anything.

The south path ran through the pines for a mile and a half.

The widows' cabins sat where it met the creek, with firewood stacked to the eaves, the very stacks I had counted in the council ledger.

We never reached them.

At the bend, one of our sentries stopped walking and slid down a trunk, and the other turned around to look at him and got hit from behind.

Men stepped out of the pines, six of them, in dark jackets and no pack colors.

"Luna," said the one in front, a gray-bearded man with a rope over his shoulder. "No trouble, please. It's only a trip."

Tilly threw her basket in his face and went for the nearest throat.
