Chapter 24: Right Alpha

The old healer put her hand on my stomach in the herb beds a month later and said, "Yes."

That was the whole conversation.

I was seven weeks along.

She told me it was a girl, and she told me not to tell anyone until I wanted to.

I wanted to tell exactly one person, and I carried it around all day.

That night was the Moon Rite.

The pack hall was lit as it had been on my eighteenth birthday, with lamps along every wall.

This time I sat on the dais in the Luna's chair, in a dark green dress the widows had sewn for me.

My mother's necklace lay at my throat.

Ronan stood at my right shoulder, in his good shirt with the sleeves rolled.

On the floor below, Tilly stood in a ring of flowers with the south sentry.

The old healer tied their wrists together with a red cord.

"You'll answer to me if you make her cry," Ronan told the sentry, on the dais steps.

"Yes, Alpha."

"And she'll break your arm first."

"Yes, Luna," said the sentry, looking only at Tilly.

Tilly was already crying.

The two of them bowed to us, and the hall howled, and I howled with them.

Then the doors opened, and a girl came in.

She was a kitchen girl, small and dark-haired, in a plain cotton dress, and she had turned eighteen at midnight.
