Chapter 6: The Council

The pack council met at two o'clock on Thursday, and my name was the first thing on the paper.

Five elders sat along one side of the hall's long table, with the old healer at the end.

Ronan sat in the middle, and I sat at his right in the red chair.

Behind us, along the walls, half the pack stood to watch.

Celia Hallett rose from the bench in front of the council with a folder in both hands.

She wore black, and I understood it was meant to look like grief.

"I take no pleasure in this," she said. "I loved this pack for thirty years as Luna. I have a duty to say what the law says."

She turned the first page.

"Section nine. A Luna must be able to lead the pack's wolves in the field. A Luna who cannot shift cannot lead the Hunt, cannot stand watch at the Moon Rite, and cannot defend the pups. That is not unkindness. That is the law."

She looked at me with real sorrow.

"I move that Nora Ellery's seat be held empty until her wolf comes, and that she be returned to her duties."

There was a murmur along the wall.

"Her duties," Ronan said evenly. "The kitchen."

"She is happy in the kitchen, Ronan. She would be safe there."

I put my hand on the table.

I had made up my mind in the night, between breaths, with that gold eye looking out of me.

"May I answer?" I asked.

Ronan turned his head.

I expected him to say no, to say it was his job.

He nodded once and leaned back in his chair.

"Luna has the floor," he said.

My legs wanted to shake, so I stood.

"I don't know much about the law," I said. "I know the kitchen. I've worked in it since I was twelve, and I know who comes to the back door."
