Chapter 15: The Term Sheet

I heard the suite door open behind me.

I didn't get up off the closet floor.

His footsteps crossed the sitting room fast and stopped in the bedroom doorway.

"The desk called me," Colm said. "Miss Cotter took the private elevator to twenty."

"On Ryland's card."

"On Ryland's card." He was breathing like he'd taken the stairs. "Romy."

I held up the paper bag.

Then the blue folder.

He didn't say anything.

That was the worst part.

He didn't say "it's not what it looks like." He just stood there and let it look like what it was.

"October twentieth," I said. "You signed it in London."

"Yes."

"You flew in to see the hotel you'd already sold."

"Yes."

"And the eighty million." I opened the folder to the underlined paragraph. "That's the star. The one he bought with my login and my sister's tips."

"Yes."

I stood up.

The notebook was still in my other hand, flour in the elastic.

"Your driver walked into my sister's apartment with her own key," I said. "While you sat in the cafeteria and read the housekeeper's notes and ate Dell's croissants."

His jaw moved.

"Keely called Ryland from the stairwell at the Guide," he said. "You told me so. He'd have had that book by morning. I took it first."

"You didn't ask me."

"No."

"You let me sit next to you all night."

"Yes."

"Why?"

He looked at the folder in my hand for a long time.

"Because if that book went to the papers before December fifteenth, the fund walks," he said. "The star's a condition. A bought star is worse than none."

"So what was the plan? For me?"

"I was going to make him pay it back. Every dollar, quietly, before the closing. He resigns. The staff get their money. The star stays. Nobody reads about it."
