Chapter 24: The Lake
The Pine Harbor county clerk's office had the same green counter and the same broken clock.
The same radiator knocked twice before it warmed.
The clerk was a woman in her sixties with reading glasses on a chain.
She took one look at the man beside me and said, "Phil Reeve and the girl with the groceries. Well, I'll be."
"Good morning," Phillip said. "It's Stannard now. Phillip."
"I don't care what it is. You owe me a wedding cake."
"I'll bring one."
My old boss from the diner stood at the back in her church coat, with her niece at her elbow.
She had come on the first bus the minute Phillip called at dawn.
"You look thin," she said to me across the room.
"I'm fine."
"You look thin and happy. It's a start."
The butler was there too, and on a wooden bench by the door sat Augustin, with his hat on his knees.
He had been asked to come, and he stayed where he was put.
Junie stood in the middle of the floor in a yellow dress with a cardigan over it.
A plastic horse was tucked in the crook of her arm.
On the horse's back, tied with a bit of ribbon, rode a thin brass ring.
