Chapter 11: The Waves

Bree was sitting at a long desk with three monitors, a mug of tea, and her feet tucked up under her.

She didn't turn around.

"You're early," she said. "I thought you'd take at least until dinner."

"There's tape on my face."

"I know. I'm still sorting out which of the old thumbnails I can use without you. It's a lot of work."

I walked in and put the toolbox on her desk.

I opened it.

She looked down at the lamb and sighed.

"Ah," she said. "The seam. I always thought it would go in the wash."

My voice came out thin.

"Tell me why."

"Sit down, Sadie."

"Tell me why."

"Okay." She turned her chair to face me, and the cardigan, the bob, the brown eyes, all of it was the same.

It was my best friend's face.

I couldn't make it fit.

"Because you never knew what you had," she said. "Eight years, and you still thought you were just a girl in a boat with a phone. You never watched the numbers. You never saw what people actually wrote under the videos."

"I saw them."

"You read the nice ones. I read all of them. They didn't love Garner. Nobody loves Garner. He reads a teleprompter well." She smiled. "They love the way you looked at the water, and the way your voice went quiet when you said the line to him. Do you know how many people have written that they cried at the sign-off?"

"Bree."

"Millions, Sadie. And you never once knew it."

My hands had gone cold.

"The kitchen," I said. "The pantry."

"I put that in two years ago, behind the flour. It was only supposed to catch behind-the-scenes. Then you started to fall apart, and it turned into the best footage I'd ever shot. Garner's lawyer asked me for something real, and I gave it to her."
