Chapter 5: Eight Rounds

That evening I found Darek on the back porch, alone, with a cold cup of my mother's coffee on the rail.

The yard behind him was dark except for the kitchen light.

I closed the screen door and stayed against it.

"What does 'again' mean?" I asked.

"Lila's ten." He turned to face me. "She always picks ten. It's her number."

"So she's won before."

"Not often. The numbers are random." He stopped. "They're supposed to be."

"Supposed to be."

"I don't know what's been typed in and what hasn't. The log only shows the manual entries when I look closely, and I've never looked closely."

"For two years."

"For nine rounds."

"Eight," I said. "You said Round 1 is gone."

"Eight I can see."

I walked to the rail and put my hands on it, a few feet from his.

I had been polite to him since he came through our front door, and my father had made him a sandwich, and I was tired of being polite.

"Here's what I don't understand," I said. "You've known them since college."

"Yes."

"You stood next to him at every dinner I ever went to."

"Yes."

"You watched them for two years."

He didn't look away. "I did."

"You saw her hand on his back at the engagement party."

"I saw it."

"You saw him texting her under the table at my cousin's graduation party. I saw him do it, too, and I told myself it was his sales team."

"I thought it was Lila, too," he said.

"Then why didn't you say a single word?"

The porch light buzzed.

"Because I wasn't sure," he said. "And because I'm the guy who isn't sure. I'm the one who tests the software and finds the flaw and writes it in a report nobody reads."
