Chapter 25: The One Offer

Roark's POV

Winona did not tell me not to go.

She sat up in the grass with my shirt pulled over her knees and read my father's message twice.

"Go," she said. "Come back and tell me every word."

"I'll tell you before I decide anything."

"That's all I wanted." She kissed the new mark on my shoulder. "Take your phone and keep it on."

I drove down off the ridge at midnight with her taste still in my mouth.

The Ironwood house sat dark at the end of its long drive, except for one window.

It was my father's study. I had stood on its rug at eight, at fifteen and at twenty, and every time he had told me what I was going to do.

The front door was unlocked. Nobody was in the hall.

The study door stood open, and there were two men inside.

My father sat behind his desk with his coat buttoned. In the leather chair across from him, with a glass of whiskey he had not touched, sat Winona's father.

I knew him from the Moon Rise steps. He had the jaw. I had never seen it on a man that gray.

"Come in, Roark," my father said. "Shut the door."

I left it open.

"You've met," my father said. "He drove all night to be here."

"Sit down," said Winona's father. "We have a proposal."

"I'll stand."

My father opened a drawer and laid a small memory card on the blotter.

"One of my hunters kept the second copy," he said. "You smashed the camera on the gatepost. You did not smash the one in the oak behind it."
