Chapter 10: Ward's Debt
Ward would not sit.
They stood at the far end of the yard, beside a rusty bench nobody used, while Rafe went in to meet his eight-thirty.
Ward kept his hands in his jacket pockets and his eyes on the concrete.
"I can't sleep," he said. "I keep seeing the stairs."
"The stairs weren't your fault."
"The stairs were days ago." He shook his head. "I'm not here about the stairs."
Kerensa waited.
He took a breath.
"I drove you to the quarry road," Ward said.
The yard was very quiet.
"Which Friday?"
"The Friday you fell. Lorna asked me at lunch. She said she wanted to show you the view, the two of you had never done anything together, and could I drive since you didn't have a license yet." His jaw worked. "I said sure. I thought it was nice."
"You drove us both."
"Both. You sat in the back. You didn't say anything the whole way."
"The body," Kerensa said, almost to herself, "was nervous."
He frowned.
"Go on," she said.
"There's a gate where the road narrows. Lorna said she wanted to walk up the last part with you and talk. Just the two of you. She asked me to wait in the car." He swallowed. "I waited forty minutes. I played a game on my phone."
"And then?"
"Then Lorna came down the hill by herself."
Kerensa felt the words land.
"She said you'd gotten upset. She said you'd told her you didn't want to be part of the family, you wanted to walk home alone, and she'd let you." Ward's voice cracked. "She had mud up to her knees. I asked why. She said she'd slipped on the path."
