Chapter 13: Her Room

The detective did not raise his voice.

"Miss Haglund, I have a complaint of attempted assault at the quarry road. I need your statement."

"Tonight?" Kerensa asked.

"Tomorrow, nine o'clock, at the Carrow station. It's voluntary."

He looked at Rafe.

"I'd advise you to bring a lawyer."

"She'll have one," Rafe said.

Lorna pressed her bandaged hand to her mouth and sobbed into Gordon's sleeve.

"She smiled at me, Dad," Lorna said. "While I screamed."

Gordon came up two steps toward Kerensa with his jaw set.

"You will answer for what you did to your sister."

"You're about forty feet from me," Kerensa said.

He stopped.

"The council ordered three hundred. It's on the record, and nine cameras are on you."

The detective said, "Mr. Haglund, step back."

Gordon stepped back.

It was the first time Kerensa had seen him give ground to anyone.

Rafe took her elbow and walked her through the lobby doors.

He made one call in the elevator.

"Nine, the station, full counsel," he said, and hung up.

Neither of them spoke on the twelfth floor.

She opened her door and pulled him in by his coat.

She turned the lock behind him.

"Is this where you say no touching?" Kerensa asked.

"No."

"Good."

He backed her against the door and kissed her.

It was nothing like the truck, because there was no road to be careful on.

His mouth was hot and hard, and his hand spread flat across her ribs.

She dragged his coat off his shoulders and let it fall.

"Your shirt," she said.

He pulled it over his head.

Old pale scars ran across his chest and left shoulder.

She laid her stitched palm over the worst of them.

He shut his eyes.

"Don't," he said hoarsely. "I'll forget my manners."
