Chapter 16: The Squad Camera

"Ward," Gordon said. "Sit down."

Ward stood up.

"I never walked up that road," he said to the detective. "I never saw anyone at the rail. That statement is a lie, and I signed it."

The lobby went silent.

"You did sign it," the detective said slowly. "At 6:10 this morning."

"In my father's garage. After his driver took my phone and my keys." Ward held out his left wrist and let the red band show. "And zipped this on me when I said no the first time."

One of Gordon's lawyers said, "Mr. Haglund is under stress, and he's confused."

"I'm not confused," Ward said. "I let him do it."

Kerensa stared at him.

"Kerensa asked me to play along," Ward said. "So I played along, and I wanted to see how far they'd go. This is how far."

"Ward," Lorna said, in a small voice. "You're upset."

"I'm done, Lorna."

He unclipped something from the collar of his jacket and put it on the front desk.

It was a small gray cube, the size of a matchbox, with a green light.

"Squad camera," Ward said. "Every B-class on a licensed team has to wear one on any job. Guild law. I forgot to take it off when I got home, and nobody remembers I have one on."

The detective stared at the cube.

"It records audio?"

"Everything. It was running in the garage."

Gordon took a step forward.

"That is my son's private property."

"It's evidence," the detective said. He did not look at Gordon. "Sergeant, play it."

A young officer pressed a button.

The speaker crackled.

"...sit down and sign." It was Gordon's voice, flat and tired. "Forty minutes at the car, then you walked up. You saw her hands on Lorna."
