Chapter 17: The Vote

Rafe Nyberg gave his statement in six minutes, and it was the first time he had said it aloud to anyone but her.

He said where the road bent, and what he had seen by the pool, and how long he had kept his hand on a dead girl's chest.

The detective wrote it all down and asked no questions about the stitches.

"That will do for now," the detective said. "Thank you, Mr. Nyberg."

Rafe stood.

Kerensa was waiting outside the room.

She did not say anything.

She took his scarred hand in her stitched one and walked him out through the lobby, past the cameras, to the truck.

By evening the whole city had it.

Every screen in the guild's hall ran the same clip: Lorna's voice in a garage, saying a woman was dead when she hit the bottom.

Rafe stood at the head of the long table at seven, and for the first time in the nine years since his father died, nobody at it looked at him.

Eleven senior hunters sat in their chairs.

Beside the door stood a man in a gray suit, a Haglund Holdings lawyer, with a leather folder.

"This is irregular," said the oldest hunter at the table, a woman with a scar through her eyebrow. "A chief's fiancee is a person of interest in an assault case."

"She was cleared of it at four this afternoon," Rafe said.

"Cleared of nothing yet. Questioned."

"Then you can ask the detective."

"I'm asking you." She laid her hands flat on the wood. "The guild's gate insurance runs through Haglund Holdings. Mr. Haglund's counsel is here with a letter. If we keep this engagement, he pulls the policy at midnight."
