Chapter 18: Page Nine

At 8:50 the next morning, Constance walked into the guild lobby with a letter.

"The loan call needs both Haglund signatures," she said, and laid it on the reception desk. "That's in the company charter my father wrote. I haven't signed."

Rafe read it twice.

"Mrs. Haglund, he'll fight this."

"He'll fight it in a court, and it will take a year." She buttoned her coat. "I'm coming tonight, if you'll have me. I'd like to sit at the front."

At nine the guild still stood.

That night the Haglund Hotel ballroom held three hundred guests under crystal lights, and every seat had a gold card.

HAGLUND FOUNDATION, ANNUAL BOARD DINNER.

Investors sat at the front tables with their wives.

The press stood along the back wall.

Gordon was on the dais in a black dinner jacket, and a judge had let him out that afternoon on bail.

Lorna sat beside him in white.

She smiled when Kerensa walked in with Rafe on her arm, and Constance behind them.

"Mrs. Haglund," Gordon said into the microphone, with an effort at warmth. "I'm glad you could join us."

Constance took the front seat without a word.

Kerensa sat down beside her.

"Friends," Gordon said. "Two months ago my family was made whole again. The press has been unkind. The truth has been told in pieces, and some of it, I admit, is unflattering."

He gestured at Lorna.

"But my daughter has stood by this foundation for three years, as a director and as the captain of our private strike team. Tonight I am naming her my successor, and the investors in our new gate-site contracts have my promise that a B-class Haglund leads their security."

Applause rippled through the front tables.
