Chapter 21: The Door
Rafe took the quarry road at a speed that made the detective's car fall behind.
Kerensa sat in the passenger seat with a torn sleeve and a scraped palm, and did not say a word about it.
"Stay in the truck," he said at the guild gate.
"Rafe."
"I know what the order says. He's three hundred feet from you, or he's not, and I'd rather he never gets to find out."
She looked at him.
"I'll listen from here," she said.
Gordon Haglund stood on the guild's front steps alone.
There was no driver and no lawyer.
His car sat at the curb with the door open and the engine running.
He wore a dinner jacket gone limp at the shoulders.
He turned when Rafe came up the walk.
"I came to see my daughter," he said.
"She doesn't want to see you."
"I'm her father."
Rafe stopped on the top step and stood in the open doorway.
He did not step aside.
"I watched you once and I didn't move," Rafe said. "I'm not going to do that twice."
"Nyberg. Get out of my way."
"No."
Gordon came up the steps.
He was bigger than Rafe in the shoulders and twenty years older, and his hand was already coming up and back.
Rafe lifted two fingers.
The air in front of him moved.
It was a flat wall of pressure.
It pinned Gordon against the glass of the lobby doors with his arm still raised.
His feet hung an inch off the step.
He could not swing it.
He could not even drop it.
"I'd like you to listen," Rafe said, "because I'm going to say this once. My guild has a camera on this door. The detective is right behind me. If you have something to say, say it now."
