Chapter 11: Overruled

Cora's POV

I woke up alone in the biggest bed I had ever slept in, and for one second I forgot who I was married to.

Then I felt the ache in my thighs and remembered all of it.

There was a note on the kitchen counter in square, neat handwriting.

"Gone to see my brother. Back by nine. Please be here."

I read it twice.

Please be here.

It was the only time I had ever seen a man ask.

I stayed.

I made coffee in a machine that cost more than my first car.

At eight-thirty the doorbell rang, and when I opened it Romy came in, carrying a bakery box and a phone.

"I brought croissants and a lawyer's number and gossip," she said. "Which do you want first?"

"Gossip."

"The Tribune ran the photographer's statement this morning. Page three." She put the phone in my hand. "He says he got a tip before the slap. He doesn't say from who, but there's a little box that says Kirkbride Hotels has declined to comment. Four hundred thousand likes. Somebody made a meme with your face and the words 'Aunt Cora.' It's very flattering."

I looked at the screen.

Under the headline was a small photograph, taken in the conservatory ferns, of Tabitha in her silk headscarf.

My mouth fell open.

"He gave them that?"

"He's had a bad week, apparently," Romy said. She peered at my face. "Why are you glowing?"

"I'm not."

"Cora. You're wearing his shirt."

I looked down.

She screamed into a croissant.

Declan came home at ten past nine.

He stood in the doorway for a second looking at me, and I understood from his face that he'd been afraid I wouldn't be there.

He had a laptop under one arm and a pale, stiff look I didn't recognize.
