Chapter 21: Glenn's Price
The groom's mother put the five thousand dollars into my father's hand and walked her son out of the ballroom.
My mother did not move from her chair until the waiters began clearing the salad.
Friday night was the fish fry at St. Brendan's, which brought half the parish into the hall.
I went because Glenn asked me to, in a voice I had not heard from him before.
"I need to say something where they can hear it," he said. "I'd like you to be in the room."
"Is this a show?"
"No. It's a bill."
The hall smelled of fried cod and coffee.
Long tables filled the floor, and the women of the altar guild moved between them with trays.
The priest saw us and put down his tongs.
Glenn went to the front, past the bake sale, past the banner that still read FOR VEDA because nobody had taken it down.
He didn't ask for the microphone.
He took it from the stand and tapped it twice.
"Good evening," he said. "My name is Glenn Horvath. I've been a member of this parish for three years, and most of you don't know me, because I sat in the last pew and left before the coffee."
