Chapter 15: Swim
"You called him," I said.
"I told him four o'clock," said my mother. "I didn't know which way you'd answer."
"You knew."
"I hoped you would say yes," she said, and picked up the ledger and put it in her pocket.
Car doors slammed in the drive, three of them, one after another.
I stood, and the chair went over behind me.
The front door opened with a key, and I heard Neal in the hall, using the soft voice he used on frightened clients.
"Gillian? Sweetheart? It's only me."
He came into the kitchen with two men behind him.
They wore gray jackets and soft shoes, and one of them carried a folded paper and the other a canvas strap.
Neither of them looked at me.
"There she is," said Neal, and his eyes were wet and bright. "Oh, thank God, there she is."
"Mr. Weldon," I said.
"Don't. Don't do that voice." He spread his hands. "You're my wife, and you're not well. These gentlemen are from Silverbrook, and they have a court order. Nobody is going to hurt you."
