Chapter 5: Cedar Fork

I woke up soaked and shaking in a room that smelled of pine boards and rubbing alcohol.

A woman was sitting on a stool beside the bed, scrolling through her phone with her feet up on the rail.

She was small and wiry, with a thick brown ponytail and flannel over a set of scrubs.

"There she is," she said. "Don't sit up. If you throw up on my floor I'll make you mop it."

I tried to answer, and my voice scraped.

"Where am I?"

"Cedar Fork. I'm Trudy, I'm the healer, and that was my brother's truck you got carried to." She put the phone down. "You've been out six hours. You've sweated through three sheets and bitten the pillow twice, so I'd say you're doing great."

I laughed.

It hurt, and it came out half a sob, but it was a laugh.

Trudy's face softened a little, and she held a glass of water to my mouth.

"Small sips. I drew blood while you were out," she said. "Wolfsbane, enough to flatten a bull elk. You've been walking around on it for how long?"

"Ten years."

She didn't say anything for a moment.

Then she set the glass down very carefully, and her jaw went tight.

"Okay," she said. "Okay. Then you're allowed to feel exactly as bad as you feel."

The shaking got worse as the afternoon went on.

Trudy put cold cloths on my neck and made me drink salt water.

"What happened with Ramsay?" I managed.

"Sanctuary." Trudy sounded pleased. "You said it, three of his own enforcers heard it, and the Alliance law is old and boring and specific. Three days. He spat and growled and said some things my brother will not repeat, and then he went home. The Ceremony is still on, by the way. They won't postpone it."

"Three days," I said.

"That's what you get." She tucked the blanket under my chin. "Use them."
