Chapter 24: The Kitchens
"You can't call him," I said. "You never could."
"I don't need to." Celandine turned to go. "After tomorrow, nobody will remember who could."
Her candle went away up the stair.
I didn't sit down again.
I stood in the dark with my hands on the bars.
The kitchen bell rang one.
Then, through the slit in the wall, I heard humming.
An old woman's voice, cracked and low, going round and round the pot song.
I knew it.
I'd learned that tune from it over a pan of onions when I was nine.
Something scraped at the back of my cell.
It wasn't the bars.
It was the old door in the far wall that I'd always thought was bricked up.
It opened inward, very slowly, and a lantern came through it.
Dorrit.
Behind her, holding the key, stood the Eyrie's head cook.
"This was my cold store before it was the King's prison," she said. "Nobody ever asked for my key back."
I couldn't say anything.
She looked at me the way she used to when I'd burned the porridge.
