Chapter 14: The Pickup Line

The torn half of the page fluttered to the asphalt, and Cavan picked it up.

"It's a copy," he said. "The county will send me a certified one by Friday."

"It's forged," Danielle said.

Her voice shook.

She had her hand on Hoyt's sleeve, and her eyes were already wet.

"Hoyt, they got to someone. You know what Audrey's been like since she lost the baby. She'd say anything to take you away from us."

Hoyt looked at her hand.

"Show me the crash report," he said.

"What?"

"The police report from the hill by the quarry. Three years ago. You've told me about it so many times. Show me the paper."

"Not here. Not in front of her."

"Then bring it to Otto's school at three. I'll pick him up with you."

"Hoyt."

"I'll be there," he said. "So will Audrey."

She looked at me with a flash of something raw, and then it was gone, and she nodded.

"Fine," she said softly. "Fine. I'll show you, and then you'll see what she is."

At ten to three, I stood at the edge of Otto's school lot with Leah and Cavan, and the pickup line was already forming.

Mothers with strollers.

Fathers in work boots.

A teacher in a yellow vest holding a clipboard by the doors.

She was Otto's teacher, and when she saw me, she lifted her chin and said nothing.

Hoyt's gray sedan pulled in at five to three.

Danielle got out first, with her cardigan buttoned wrong and a manila envelope under her arm.

Hoyt came around the car slowly.

"Here," Danielle said, loud enough for the nearest parents to hear. "Here it is, Hoyt. All of it. I kept it three years in a drawer so I'd never have to look at it again."
