Chapter 7: City Hall
The decree was final at nine on Monday morning.
At ten past nine on Tuesday I stood in a city hall corridor in a white suit, holding a bunch of grocery-store roses.
I had no one to stand beside me.
Etienne's grandmother had stayed home with her cane and her opinions.
Etienne waited by the clerk's window, checking his watch, and I realized he was nervous.
"You can still change your mind," he said.
"I signed already."
"People un-sign."
"Not me," I said. "Not twice in one month."
His mouth moved, and it was almost a laugh.
The clerk was a tired man with a stamp.
"You'll need a witness for the signature," he said. "Either of you have one?"
I looked down the hall.
It was empty except for a woman holding a pair of pearl earrings in her hand, and she was walking toward us.
She wore a navy suit, and her silver hair was cut in a plain line at her jaw.
It was Colin's mother.
I could not think of a single thing to say.
"Mrs. Rutherford."
"Clarissa," she said. "You have not been Mrs. Rutherford since yesterday."
She put the earrings on, one at a time.
"I'm not here for my son," she said. "He is in the car park, working up the nerve. I came before him."
"Why?"
"Because in three years at my table, nobody asked you one thing about yourself." Her voice was dry and exact. "I should have done it. I'm doing something now."
She took the clerk's pen.
"I'll be her witness."
The clerk looked from her to me, and shrugged.
