Chapter 10: Eleven Minutes

I started the voice memo on my phone at ten to three and tucked the phone under my pillow with the screen dark.

"Tell me again why we're doing this," Tamara said from the chair.

"Because she asked to come alone."

"And you said yes."

"I said yes because I want her to talk."

Tamara got up and went out into the hall.

"I'll be at the end of the corridor," she said. "With my arms folded. Scream if you need me."

Kelsey came in at three on the dot.

She wore a soft pink sweater and no makeup, and she carried a small white envelope and a bunch of yellow tulips.

She looked younger without her camera.

"I brought you flowers," she said. "May I sit?"

"You have five minutes."

She sat on the edge of the visitor's chair, and she set the tulips on the tray table, and she put the envelope beside them.

"First I want to say I'm sorry. I'm not here to fight. I was so careless with your family, and I know it."

"You sold my daughter's story."

"I borrowed it."

She said it simply.

I let the silence stand there until she filled it.

"Russell gave me the notebook last March, and I read it in one night, and I cried so hard," she said. "It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever read. And nobody was reading it. It was lying in a cedar box, and nobody was ever going to open it again."

"It was mine."

"But you weren't using it, Becky. I was helping people. Those families were hurting, and they needed it. Don't you think Maisie would have wanted that?"
