Chapter 11: Walk to Remember
The doctor let me out of the hospital on Friday with a list of rules.
On Saturday morning I broke the one about crowds.
Hamish parked his truck at the edge of Riverside Park and came around to open my door.
"You drive, you carry, you don't go inside," I said. "That's still the deal."
"I'm going to walk you to the tent," he said. "I'll stay at the edge of the grass. If your pressure spikes, I'll know before you do."
He had brought a folding chair, and a thermos of tea, and a blood pressure cuff in his jacket pocket.
I looked at him for a second too long.
"Okay," I said.
Four hundred people were gathering on the lawn under pale autumn sun.
A long blue banner stretched between two trees, covered in small white names.
I found Maisie's name on the third row, hand-stitched, with a tiny moon beside it.
I put my fingers on it.
Behind me, Tamara said quietly, "Breathe."
The main stage was a low wooden platform with a lectern and a microphone.
A woman from the hospital foundation stood beside it with a clipboard.
I walked up to her with the green folder from the studio families under my arm.
"I'm Becky Harmon," I said. "Thirty-one families have asked me to speak."
"I know." She looked at the folder, and at the mother with the rabbit standing beside me. "I got half a dozen calls this week. I've listened to everything. We are going to let you say what you need to say, after she reads."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me," she said. "I put her name on the program."
