Chapter 12: Eleven Calls

I walked down the three wooden steps with the microphone still in my hand.

Nobody on the lawn said anything.

I stopped in front of Russell, who had come down off the platform and was standing alone on the grass.

"Nine calls," I said.

The microphone was still live, and the speakers carried it to every blanket and every folding chair.

"I called you nine times that night," I said. "I stood in her room at two in the morning with her chest not moving, and I called you, and you didn't pick up."

"Becky."

"You told me your phone died at the office. You told me that for four years. I made you soup on the anniversary."

"I didn't hear it ring," he said. "I swear I didn't hear."

"You turned it off."

He closed his eyes.

"I thought I'd have one night," he said. "Only one. She was sick every night, and I was so tired, Becky. I thought it was just one night. I would have given anything to take it back."

"It's been four years, and you took it back every March," I said. "You went to her, with your phone off, on the day our daughter died."

He opened his mouth, and nothing came out.

I put the microphone down on the nearest folding chair.

I did not scream at him, and I did not hit him.

I had imagined this moment so many times, in so many versions, and in none of them had I been this quiet.

"I am divorcing you," I said. "I'm going to raise this baby, and you will see him when I say so, and only then. And you will never read him that story."
