Isaline didn't move.
The spout chattered once more against the china, and then the cup was full.
The maid set the pot down and stepped back to the wall, her hands folded tight over the burned knuckle.
"She came to my kitchen door the morning after your wedding," her father said. "Soaked to the knees. Terrified."
"Of what?"
"Of that house. Of him."
He lowered his voice, though there was nobody to hear but the three of them and the portrait.
"She says the duke's steward put a little bottle in her hand and swore her boy would hang if she didn't pour it."
He shook his head sadly.
"So I took her in. What else could I do? Her son works in my stables. He's seven."
"You didn't tell me."
"You had enough to carry, darling."
Isaline looked at the maid.
The maid was looking at the floor.
Then, for one breath, she wasn't.
Her eyes went to Isaline's cup, and away.
Isaline picked it up and breathed it in.
Black tea. Bergamot. A little dried rose, the way her mother had liked it.
