Chapter 18: The Hundredth Night
It was the count's hand.
Isaline would have known it anywhere. The long slant, the way his t's leaned forward.
He had written the whole letter out once, plainly, in his own writing.
Then, down the margin, a column of capital I's.
The first ones were his.
Each one a little rounder than the last, until the bottom few were hers.
Under them he had tried the little hook on the end of her name, again and again.
She sat in the swaying carriage and looked at the proof of her father learning to be her.
Casimir watched her face over the sleeping boy's head.
"Keep that somewhere he can't reach," he said.
"There's nowhere he can't reach."
"There's me."
She folded it small and put it in her bodice beside the other one, and she kept it there.
On the hundredth evening the bishop's clerk came up the north wing stairs as he had every evening since the first.
He stood in the corridor with his book open on his arm and wrote the day in it.
Then he looked up at the two of them.
