Alistair saw him a second after I did.
I felt his arm go hard under my hand.
"Do you want me to..."
"No," I said.
I looked across Congress Street at the man by the newspaper box.
Dorian had lost more weight.
The cheap jacket hung off him.
He'd gotten himself home on Gran's twenty pounds.
He'd found his way to this plaza, three years after he'd hurried across it with Laurel's hair in his face.
He didn't come closer.
He didn't call out.
He just stood there with his hands in his pockets and his face naked.
He looked at me in yellow, at my husband, at my son holding his bus up to the sky.
I waited to feel something.
Anger. Pity. The old City Hall heat on my neck.
There was nothing there.
Not even the shape of where it used to be.
He was a man across a street.
"Faye?" said Alistair.
"I'm fine." I shifted Teddy on my hip. "Let's go home."
We walked across the plaza in a bunch.
Gran on the great-aunt's arm, arguing about lunch. The captain blowing his nose. The old woman from next door holding on to her hat.
