Chapter 11: Three A.M.
At three in the morning Asher was standing at the stove in his open shirt and gray trousers.
He was scrambling eggs with his bare feet on the tile.
I stood in the kitchen doorway and watched him.
We had come home from his mother's table at midnight, full of brisket and her third dessert.
I had gone to bed and not slept.
He had a way of cooking that I liked.
He cracked each egg one-handed, without looking, and his forearms flexed when he stirred.
"You're staring," he said, without turning.
"I'm memorizing."
He huffed a laugh. "That's my line."
"Then I'm stealing it."
I crossed the kitchen in his old cotton shirt, which came to the middle of my thighs, and stopped behind him.
I slid my hands around his waist and flattened them on his stomach.
The muscles jumped under my palms.
"Taddeo."
"I'm starting something," I said. "Keep stirring."
"That's not going to be possible."
"Try."
I let my hands slide down.
I undid his belt and the button of his trousers, and drew down the zipper, and he stopped stirring.
"Nicki."
"Eggs," I said. "Don't let them burn."
I slid around him and sank down onto my knees on the cold tile between him and the stove.
He looked down at me.
His eyes were dark behind his glasses, and the kitchen light gave him a white edge along his jaw.
He was hard already under his boxers.
I pulled them down and took him in my hand, and he made a low rough sound.
"Is this a game?" he asked, hoarse.
"It's breakfast."
I took him in my mouth.
He gripped the edge of the counter with one hand.
The other still held the spatula above the pan.
