Chapter 22: Aldric Falls
"Collar her!" Aldric shouted, a third time, to the empty air.
The gryphon looked at him, and the great bear turned its head, and so did every wolf on the sand.
No one else moved.
I walked up the platform steps with Bran at my side and Moth on my shoulder.
I stopped two steps below the Warden.
"There's nobody left to obey you," I said.
His hand dropped to the hilt of his sword.
"You are your mother's daughter," he said, soft and vicious. "She also thought she could stare me down."
"She did," I said. "It took her eleven days, and you still couldn't make her say where I was."
He drew.
I didn't flinch, and neither did the bear behind me.
A voice rang out from the foot of the steps.
"Put it down, my lord."
The Thornwick sergeant stood there with his hands open and empty.
He was a heavy, grey-faced man of fifty, and he had dropped his sword with the rest.
