Chapter 23: The Warden's Seat
Twelve thousand people waited for me to say hang him.
Some of them wanted it.
I could feel that in the air, a hunger.
Kieran stood at the foot of the steps with his hands at his sides, and he did not look away from me.
He had stood there for a quarter of an hour without being asked.
I held the silver chain in my fist and thought about the rope.
I thought about Cellar Six, and a boy with a lamp.
"I won't hang him," I said.
A noise ran through the stands, half relief and half anger.
"My mother asked him to do it, with her last breath."
"He did it, and I watched the whole thing in a stone."
"That doesn't make it small."
"He will carry it all his life, and so will I."
"But the rope is the easy way out, and he doesn't get an easy way out."
I looked down at him.
"Kieran Falkirk. You are stripped of your rank and your coat. Your name comes off the Watch roll."
"You'll sleep in the Pens, on straw, and eat what the beasts eat."
