Chapter 24: The Last True Tamer
I went to my mother's grave alone, at first light.
The lime pit lay behind the Arena in a fold of the hill, grown over with nettles and white clover.
At the far end stood a flat grey stone, no bigger than a doormat.
Someone had scratched a bell into it with a nail.
The bear walked with me as far as the nettles and lay down.
Moth rode on my shoulder and, for once, said nothing.
I knelt on the clover and put my hand flat on the stone.
It was cold, and it was only a stone.
"I asked," I said.
My voice cracked on the second word.
"I did what you wanted. I didn't order anything. They all came."
"I'm sorry it took ten years."
I took the cord from my wrist and laid it across the stone, with the brass loop next to my bell.
Then I rang the bell once, soft, the way I always do when I'm nervous.
Out in the valley, a thousand beasts lifted their heads.
I felt it.
Far off, over the Thornwood, the Hollow wolves began to sing.
I stayed there until the sun was warm on my back.
