Chapter 20: Pearls
"Stop," I said.
I was on my feet before I knew I'd stood.
The proctors stopped. Everyone stopped.
"She's a student of this academy," I said to the high table. "She has the right to answer in front of the Headmistress before anyone takes her anywhere. That's in the charter."
"Page four again?" somebody muttered.
"Page eleven," I said.
The Headmistress looked at me over her spectacles for a long moment.
Then she put down her knife.
"Bring her here," she said. "And the pearls."
The proctors walked Kerensa up to the dais.
Kerensa's face was white, and her freckles stood out. She was holding her chin up so hard it was shaking.
I went and stood beside her.
Morvran came and stood on her other side.
One of the proctors set a string of pearls on the high table. Three strands, with a gold clasp. Aveline wore them every day.
Aveline came up the hall with Leofric behind her.
"I don't know why we're doing this in public," she said. "It's humiliating for the poor girl."
"You seemed fine with public when you pointed at her," I said.
The Headmistress held up a hand.
"Miss Polglase," she said. "Did you take these?"
