Chapter 22: Final

By noon, there wasn't a seat left in the stands.

The whole academy had come, and half of Lowtown had walked up the hill.

The great houses sat in the dignitaries' box under silk awnings, with their beasts at their feet.

The dragon house delegation sat in the middle, in gold and black.

Our mother sat with them.

She'd come for the final. She hadn't sent me a word.

Kerensa had the GO MUD SNAKE banner. She'd added a second line overnight. It said AND HIS BEASTWRIGHT.

"I didn't sleep," I said.

"Nor did I," Morvran said. "I kept thinking about lunch."

"You can have lunch after."

"I'll have lunch after, and then I'll have a second lunch, and you won't stop me."

I fixed his collar. My hands weren't quite steady.

He caught them.

"Look at me," he said.

I looked at him.

"Whatever happens out there," he said, "you'll have done it right. You always do it right."

The trumpets went.

We walked out onto the sand from one side.

Leofric and Aveline walked out from the other.

He was magnificent. Gold all over, his color deep, his shoulders back.

The tonic had made him whole.

Aveline wore white. Her wrist was bandaged where I'd bent it.

The Headmistress came down onto the sand between us with two red silk ribbons.
