Chapter 23: The Kneeling
The great hall was full again, and this time nobody sneered.
A month had gone by since the gate, and the lords had come to hear the duke's will in the open.
Linnea sat in the ducal chair's twin, which Aldric had ordered carved the night after the birth.
Each of the twins slept in a cradle at the foot of the dais, one on either side.
Aldric stood before them in black and silver with his hands at his sides.
"Lords of Skarreth," he said. "Six years I sat this chair, and you waited for an heir."
A few lords smiled into their beards.
"You have two," he said. "And you have a duchess who was sold for four hundred crowns and who walked into my mountain with nothing."
A murmur went up.
He said it plainly, and nobody laughed.
"I have given her a place at my council table and a vote that counts as mine. I name her duke-consort of Skarreth, equal, with no steward over her."
The old lord from the second row nodded.
"We accept," he said. "I think we accepted at the gate."
