Chapter 18: Honora's Last Pitch
I had a recipe box, a three-legged dog, and a key to a room above a bakery.
The woman who ran the children's wing had left it in a voicemail, after seeing me at her donation jar.
"I do posters," I told five people under an awning. "I'm told the rent is free for a month."
The room on Washington Avenue was one long space with a slanted ceiling.
The radiator knocked.
The smell of cinnamon came up through the floor.
By noon there were six folding chairs and a folding table.
The quiet man from accounts had carried a stapler out of Strickland in his coat.
"It's mine," he said. "I bought it in 2014."
Pickle claimed the sunniest patch of floor and was appointed head of security by a vote of five to nothing.
