Chapter 16: Fabiano Falls
The shot cracked off the water, and Fabiano stopped.
He turned around slowly with his hand pressed to his ribs.
The driver stood eight feet behind him with the gun held out in both hands, steady as a man at a range.
"Who are you to me?" Fabiano said stupidly.
"I am her brother," the driver said. "Your first wife's."
"I drove you four years, waiting for a bad stair."
He fired again.
Fabiano went down on his knees in the road, and then onto his face on the tar.
The gold watch slid off his wrist and rolled.
Nobody screamed.
Sixty Corsini guns pointed at the driver, and thirty Buffalo men stood still with their own guns hanging from their hands.
The driver set his pistol on the road and raised his open hands.
"I am done," he said. "Do what you want."
Adriano walked out through the gate alone.
He stepped over the dead man and picked up the pistol, and he looked at the Buffalo men, one row at a time.
"Roncalli is dead on Corsini ground," he said. "Whoever wants to avenge him can do it now."
