Chapter 5: Corso Boxing
"I'm not family yet," I said.
"Sure you are." Paulie swirled the whiskey. "The desk sergeant at Whitaker Avenue called me before you got back on the expressway."
My stomach dropped.
"Who do you think the cops call first?" he said. "I told you that Tuesday. You didn't listen."
He stood up off the stair.
He was shorter than me by an inch, and it didn't matter at all.
"Report's gone, by the way. Lost in a drawer. Happens all the time." He reached out and touched the cut on my cheek with one thick finger. "Your mother's got a hard hand. You should learn from her."
I didn't step back.
My dad used to say you don't step back from a dog.
"Paulie."
Angelo was at the top of the stairs.
He came down them slowly, one hand on the rail, and he didn't look at me once.
He looked at his brother's finger.
Paulie took it off my face.
"Just welcoming her," Paulie said.
"Go home."
"This is my brother's house."
"Then go wherever you sleep when it's not," Angelo said. "Now."
Paulie set the whiskey glass on the newel post, very gently.
At the door he turned.
"Girls who live in this house learn which doors to keep shut, sweetheart. Ask your sister."
Then he was gone, and the cold came in where he'd been.
Angelo looked at my cheek for a long time.
"Who?"
"My mother."
His jaw went tight.
He picked up my duffel and carried it to my room.
That night, I showed Domenic the video.
He watched it twice without a word.
Then he handed me back the phone.
"Say nothing," he said. "To anyone. Let her keep swapping."
"You'll be in agony."
"I'll act like it. You'll give me the real ones in the dark." He closed his yellow eyes. "I want to know who she brings them to."
