Chapter 24: The Final Whistle
On the second Saturday in February, Halverson Arena sold out for the first time in eleven years.
I sat on the bench with my clipboard and a new pair of skates under my seat that fit.
The TV cameras stood on platforms at both ends, red lights glowing.
Behind our bench sat my mother and my stepfather, and beside them Rhett's mother with her cane across her knees.
Dottie sat between them, in a captain's jersey three sizes too big, with a purple cast signed by half the team.
Hallie crouched at the end of the glass with her camera, grinning at me.
Jase sat at the other end of the bench.
He had served his two games.
He wore an ordinary jersey with no C on the chest.
All week he had spoken to nobody except to ask for the puck.
With four minutes left, we were down 3 to 2.
Syracuse's defense had collapsed into a trap, and every time Rhett touched the puck, two men were on him.
I saw him take a stick across the back of his legs.
