Chapter 22: The Letter
Mom shut the door on him.
She turned the deadbolt, and then the chain, and stood with her hand flat on the wood while his engine started in the driveway.
The headlights swung across the front hall and were gone.
Tate turned to me.
"What did you take?"
"Nothing."
"Lainey."
"Nothing, Tate. I counted gauze in that clinic. I restocked rooms. I didn't take so much as a tongue depressor."
He looked at me for a long second.
"Okay," he said.
He believed me before I'd finished saying it, and that scared me more than Doug had.
At eight on Monday the dean's office emailed me a PDF.
It was a letter to the state medical board, copied to the dean, on the Ironmen team clinic's letterhead.
It said that on the morning of my removal from the clerkship, a medical student named Lainey Molloy was seen taking a box of testosterone vials from the clinic's locked medication cabinet.
Testosterone is a controlled substance.
It said the clinic had reason to believe I'd given the vials to a reporter to stage a scandal.
It was signed by the clinic coordinator.
