Chapter 26: Ours
I read the email three times in the hallway.
Then I put my phone in my pocket.
"What?" Tate said.
"The school reopened my case. Because he said seduced on camera."
His jaw went tight.
"Terms," I said. "My career is mine."
He breathed out through his nose.
"Your career is yours," he said. "Can I at least be mad about it?"
"You can be very mad about it."
"Good. I'm very mad about it."
I heard nothing from the dean on Friday. Nothing on Saturday.
On Sunday Mom made a roast.
She'd made a roast every Sunday for ten years, at five, at a table where Doug sat at the head and talked about trades.
This was the first one without him.
Tate parked his truck in the driveway at ten to five.
We sat there for a second.
"We could go in separately," he said. "Like always. You first, me five minutes later."
"We could."
He looked at me.
"I don't want to," he said.
"Me neither."
He came around and opened my door with his left hand.
I took it.
We walked up the front steps holding hands.
He rang the bell instead of using his key, because he wanted somebody to open the door and see.
My brother opened it.
He looked at our hands.
He turned around and screamed into the house.
"THEY'RE HOLDING HANDS!"
My sister came down the hall at a dead run in her socks and slid the last six feet on the hardwood.
"Are you married?"
"No," I said.
"Are you going to be married?"
"Bug," Tate said. "Ask me tomorrow."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "I will."
Mom came out of the kitchen in her apron with the carving knife still in her hand.
She looked at us for a long moment.
Then she put the knife down on the hall table, kissed me, kissed Tate, and said, "Wash your hands. Both of you. All four of them."
"Three," Tate said. "One's in a sling."
"Wash the three."
The doorbell rang again behind us.
