Chapter 15: Reborn

Linnet listened to the recording standing up.

She heard Anselm's soft, fond voice say that he had cut the line himself, and her knees went.

Silvan caught her elbow and lowered her onto the library sofa.

Madam Ravenscroft sat across from them with her rosary in her fist, and she had not made a sound since the second minute.

"Play the end again," Madam said.

Silvan played it.

Anselm laughed. Anselm said the dead man could tell no one anything.

Madam rose, walked to the window, and stood with her back to the room.

"I will kill him," she said, very calmly. "With my own hands, in front of the whole of Freverland."

"No, Grandmother," Silvan said. "Linnet and I will bury him. Let her say how."

Linnet looked at him.

"Madam," she said. "Would you leave us for a few minutes?"

Madam looked at her, and then at her grandson, and then she went out and shut the door.

Linnet sat with her hands pressed between her knees.

"There is something I haven't told you," she said. "You won't believe it."

"Try me."

"I have lived this year before."

He did not laugh, and he did not move.

"The first time, I woke up in that hotel and I ran," she said. "I ran to Anselm, because he was my friend."

"And?"

"I refused the marriage. Your grandmother crushed my mother's mill for it, and my mother died of the debt."
